The Brookline Logic.

By Jim Conley • Sep 29th, 2006 • Category: CPA Vote

It seems that some opponents of the 3% property tax surcharge on the local ballot in November are such because they fear it will reduce the likelihood of a Proposition 2.5 override at a later date.
Rest assured, CPA proponents have done their homework. According to yesterday’s TAB, a debate on the measure featured this [...]

Brookline’s Usual Suspects.

By Jim Conley • Sep 27th, 2006 • Category: Campaign Finance

It’s this site’s mission to help bring more transparency to government, and no more so than in the area of campaign finance. Wtih that, we have turned our attention to those who write checks in the Massachusets Race for Governor. According to data filed with the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, [...]

Hey, Here’s a Great Idea.

By Jim Conley • Sep 25th, 2006 • Category: CPA Vote

Now that existing home sales are at an 11-year low in Massachusetts and foreclosures are at an all-time high, why don’t we impose a 3% property tax surcharge - called a CPA - to fund community preservation in Brookline?
As luck would have it, there is such a measure on the local November ballot.
Supporters of the [...]

I Want to Know What Love Is.

By Jim Conley • Sep 24th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

Taking her turn to rev the engine that is The Boston Globe’s rapid decline, “City Weekly” correspondent Emma Stickgold files a brief on the Brookline vote given to Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor (and former Selectmen’s Chair) Deb Goldberg that carries this headline: “They Do Love Her in Brookline.”
On what does Stickgold (and her copy editor) base [...]

Planet Brookline.

By Jim Conley • Sep 21st, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

While it’s the policy of this site to kick people in power only while they are up, we can’t resist noting this from former Brookline Selectman Deb Goldberg (on her campaign for Lt. Governor) in today’s TAB:
“We ran a hell of a campaign,” Goldberg told those who cheered for her at a post-election party [...]

The Seventy Percent Solution.

By Jim Conley • Sep 20th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

Given that 70% of Brookline voters casting a vote in yesterday’s Democratic Primary did so for Deval Patrick, we can assume they agree with him when he says:

“Voters said no to the inside deals and mediocre performance of our current administration; and yes to accountability, candor and leadership.”
Is it possible that Brookline Selectmen Bobby Allen, [...]

Strange Bidness.

By Jim Conley • Sep 20th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

During last week’s TMMA meeting, Economic Development Advisory Board Member Paul Saner (before doing the Brookline punch and run) mounted a vigorous (and highly defensive) defense of the Town’s dealings with developers of the Webster St. Hotel, which sits on Town-owned property.
I thought the man doth protest too much, so I went back to my [...]

Epilogue.

By Jim Conley • Sep 20th, 2006 • Category: Goldberg Follies

This completes onbrookline.com’s coverage of the Goldberg Follies. Though, Goldberg will figure prominently in upcoming tales of hotels, landfills, as well as the pension and debt crises facing Brookline.
The fates have been kind to your publisher, for to continue this line of reporting would have had the effect of abetting Angry White Woman Kerry Healey [...]

Can’t Make This Stuff Up.

By Jim Conley • Sep 19th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

Scream Team member and former Chair of the Brookline Board of Selectmen Donna Kalikow has this to say in a letter to the TAB on the issue of Deb Goldberg allegedly “flashing her commissioner’s badge” to avoid a traffic citation:
“I don’t know the particulars about the badge-flashing incident, but I can say this. It [...]

Time for the Shouting.

By Jim Conley • Sep 19th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

According to (the always helpful) Town Clerk Pat Ward, as of 5 P.M. just under 20% of voters had turned out in Brookline. (I think Ward was projecting a much higher turnout [40%], which seems remote at this point). The precincts seeing the most action are (with votes cast so far):
Pct. 3 - 472
Pct. [...]
