Here’s a Surprise.

Town Counsel Jennifer Dopazo says that the campaign finance proposal before Brookline Town Meeting is not legal because, among other things, it pre-empts State Law.
Now where was that prophesied? Oh yeah, here.
Update: According to the Advisory Committee’s recommendation against the campaign finance measure we read that: “One member of the (Committee) believed that [...]

Driving Priorities.

When the Brookline Selectmen were faced with the need to replace personal protection gear for the entire 160 member fire fighting force, what did they do? They asked the US Department of Homeland Security for a $550 thousand grant.
What did they do upon hearing in June (through the Brookline Open Space and Recreation Master [...]

Know Them by Their Acts.

Today’s mail drop at home featured a newsletter (addressed to My Dulcinea) from the Brookline Greenspace Alliance urging a yes vote on Question 4. Hmm, a non-profit organization sends out their newsletter (one whose previous issues I don’t remember having received) endorsing a referendum question a week before the vote.
This is not a public [...]

Luckily, They Only Get to Vote Once.

Several members of the Parks Mob are so hopped up over a CPA tax surcharge in Brookline, that they’ve endorsed it twice on the pro-CPA website.
Update: Seems the pro-CPAers winnowed down their list and went to one person one endorsement. Here’s the text from the multiple endorsements page, in case you want to [...]

Hoy Does The People’s Business.

Why is Selectman Gil Hoy involved in lease negotiations at One and Two Brookline Place when he has taken a campaign donation from one of the parties in the deal? In 2002, Hoy received a donation from David T. Rubin, a partner in the collective that owns One Brookline Place. The Town just [...]

Quote of the Day.

By Jim Conley • Oct 26th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

From Robert Kennedy, Jr. while speaking in Phoenix today:
“We have a negligent press in this country,” one that has “let the American people down” by not covering what he called the “worst environmental White House we’ve ever had in history, bar none.”
How very uncivil of him. Can’t he find something positive to say about the [...]

On April 11, 2006 the Brookline Board of Selectmen, according to their meeting minutes, took the following action:
The Board considered the question of authorizing the Fire Department to submit an Application for a Federal Grant to purchase Protective Clothing.
On motion, it was unanimously,

Save the Jumpsuits.

We’re two weeks out from a general election that some think will be seismic. A new Congress may be in the works - pundits say - because of opposition to the Iraq War. How very convenient for those in power.
Here’s why the electoral mood has turned sour - people are sick of getting ripped [...]

October Column - The Parks Mob.

By Jim Conley • Oct 23rd, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

Some readers are curious as to why I’ve taken to calling the preservationist community the “Parks Mob.” Well, it all goes back to the evening of January 24, 2006 when a mob turned out to shout down then-Selectman Michael Sher as he asked his colleagues to investigate the lack of controls in the Brookline [...]
