All Hope is Dashed.

Via Blue Mass Group, here is the list of donors contribting to the Patrick inauguration. It’s worse than even a cynical mind like mine could conjure up.
Love the Friday afternoon announcement, by the way…right out of the Karl Rove playbook.

MBTA Says No More Free Rides.

By Jim Conley • Dec 29th, 2006 • Category: On Brookline Blog

Starting Monday, there’ll be no more free rides outbound on the Green Line. The T says they are simplifying the fare system…charging the same rate no matter where you get on, or how long you ride.
That’s a great idea. But why stop at local transit fares? Why shouldn’t a person flying to [...]

Strange Brew.

By Jim Conley • Dec 28th, 2006 • Category: Brookline Town Government

So I asked the Brookline School Department to send me the Material Safety Data Sheets on the material that caused the evacuation at Baker School and they sent me a copy of this: (link to the sheet), which I’m sure they received from the Town’s Building Department.
The data sheet is for BMOC Plus. What’s [...]

Principled Government.

By Jim Conley • Dec 26th, 2006 • Category: Brookline Politics

Here’s a point worth making. Many pixels on this site have been given over to the incompetence of Brookline Town Government. But the incompetence of which I speak is a preference for political expediency over well-reasoned policy. That rests with those operating from the sixth floor of Brookline Town Hall…and the pursuit of self-interest [...]

Pimp My Town.

By Jim Conley • Dec 21st, 2006 • Category: Brookline Town Government, DeWitt Demotion, Spooner Road, The Allen Files

One of the more popular offerings on MTV is the show Pimp My Ride, where viewers have their cars refashioned to reflect the sensibilities of the urban street. The film Hustle and Flow (well worth seeing) succeeds in making the pimp a sympathetic character.
Pimping is in, and Brookline’s caught the trend.
A front page story [...]

Lucky They’re Not in L.A.

Via Universal Hub, check this out (Brookline shoplifting arrest).  A thankless job done well is something to behold.

Covering the Collective Ass.

By Jim Conley • Dec 20th, 2006 • Category: Brookline Town Government

Baker School will re-open tomorrow. I know that Brookline School Superintendent Bill Lupini wouldn’t call school unless he believed the facility was absolutely safe for kids. And I wouldn’t worry about sending them to school on Thursday.
What I do worry over, and want answers to, is how this happened. Covering Brookline Town [...]

Public Health Loses to Public Relations.

By Jim Conley • Dec 20th, 2006 • Category: Brookline Town Government

The TAB has posted an on-line story on the Baker School evacuation that is downright frightening. Brookline’s Health Director, Dr. Alan Balsam - who has a Ph.D. in Nutrition - is on the case, and that’s what’s frightening.
The story says:
Despite the illnesses students reported on Monday, Health Director Dr. Alan Balsam said the concentrations [...]

The Brookline Tradition.

By Jim Conley • Dec 20th, 2006 • Category: Brookline Town Government

Apparently, Brookline’s Building Commissioner Jim Nickerson is blaming the spill of antifreeze at the Baker School on a plumbing contractor who caused a valve to leak.
When asked to name the contractor last night, Nickerson refused.
Good to see that the tradition of protecting people who make money through the generosity of taxpayers hasn’t given way to [...]

Passing the Smell Test (Part II).

By Jim Conley • Dec 19th, 2006 • Category: Brookline Town Government

Let’s set aside for a moment the fact that somebody in Brookline’s Building Department decided to run anti-freeze through the heat transfer piping at an elementary school. Could it be that people were physically affected during yesterday’s leak because the same genius decided to put ethylene glycol in the system instead of the less [...]
