Frank’s Good Judgment.

By Jim Conley • Mar 18th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics

This is rich. The Washington Post has a story in today [click here to read] on Governor Deval Patrick’s dramatic fall to earth. And whom do they seek out for political analysis? Perry Street resident and former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis (see picture at left).
And on the ethics of it all, the [...]

Congratulations Indeed.

By Jim Conley • Mar 17th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen

On Tuesday, Brookline’s Chief Information Officer Kevin Stokes and Webmaster Ben Vivante will be “congratulated” by the Selectmen on their award by Common Cause as part of a “good government campaign.” That’s like being congratulated by Alberto Gonzales for your commitment to justice.
Update: Brookline is one of 72 communities to receive this award [see [...]

St. Patrick’s Day Message.

By Jim Conley • Mar 17th, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

“There’s a band around called ‘Free Beer’. Always draws a big crowd.” - from Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments, as members try to come up with a name for their North Dublin band.

Click here to watch The Commitment’s perform “At the Dark End of the Street.”
And here’s the movie trailer — it’s a great one. [...]

Someone’s Got Some Splainin’ to Do…

By Jim Conley • Mar 16th, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

In their report on today’s fatal fire on St. Mary’s Street, Channel 4 says that, “nearly two dozen residents were evacuated from the building.”
Two dozen?
According to The Brookline Assessor’s office, the building where the fire occurred is a “three family house” owned by a “Chin Realty Trust” out of Braintree. And this isn’t the [...]

Selectmen Playing with Fire.

By Jim Conley • Mar 16th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen

In their budget presented last week, the Brookline Selectmen and Town Administrator Richard Kelliher proposed to take three firefighters off the force and close a station during the summer months. Given that one of these positions will be re-assigned to a desk, the net loss to the force is two positions.
That will save [...]

Tragedy Strikes.

By Jim Conley • Mar 16th, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

Four alarm fire strikes at St. Mary’s Street. One person dead, one firefighter injured. See Globe story.
We’ll leave the discussion over the importance of a fully-staffed BFD [see previous post] for a later time.
Update: According to Channel 4, two firefighters hurt…injuries not considered life threatening.
Update (2): According to The Brookline Assessor’s office, the [...]

Mermell Goes Missing.

By Jim Conley • Mar 15th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics

I asked Brookline Selectman’s candidate and presumptive way-out-in-frontrunner Jesse Mermell whether she’ll work to see a woman elected as chair of the Board after the election in May. [see previous post] See, Mermell is executive director of the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus and they work to “change the face of Massachusetts Politics” as advocates [...]

More of Allen’s Playground Antics.

By Jim Conley • Mar 15th, 2007 • Category: The Allen Files

This is too good to leave just in the comments [see the post below]. Patricia Connors, a member of the Coolidge Corner District Planning Council (and of Brookline Town Meeting) reports from last night’s public hearing:
“Selectman Allen’s latest display of disrespect for the public and a town council occurred last evening at the public hearing [...]

It’s a Shame Alright.

By Jim Conley • Mar 15th, 2007 • Category: The Allen Files

Today’s TAB has a story in on Sunshine Week (an awareness event on the need for public records compliance by public officials). Who knew there was such a thing.
Here, dear Brookliner, is what the Chairman of your Board of Selectmen - Robert L. Allen, Jr. - has to say (with rebuttal) to questions [...]

Everybody Look What’s Going On.

By Jim Conley • Mar 14th, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

There’s no underestimating the damage the Bush Administration has done to the institutions of justice. And The New York Times reports today that the recent purge of US Attorneys by the Administration was based in part by ratings of loyalty to the White House.
Oh yee of the Progressive stripe, don’t think for a minute [...]

Aggrieve This.

By Jim Conley • Mar 13th, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

Archie has more on Brookline’s approach to zoning and if you think you might be aggrieved, think again.
Here’s Part II of the series.

Now This Would Be an Embarrassment.

By Jim Conley • Mar 13th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, The Allen Files

I reported this in a previous post, but it bears repeating. In February, selectman’s candidate Jesse Mermell (running unopposed on the crony ticket) tells the Herald’s Wayne Woodlief that she’s embarrassed by the all-male Massachusetts Congressional delegation, saying:
“Washington state has two U.S. senators, a woman governor and one House member. We are one of [...]

Forget 9-1-1. Dial G-O-L-F.

By Jim Conley • Mar 12th, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

This is good. In their FY08 municipal budget, Town Administrator Richard Kelliher and the Brookline Selectmen have cut 3 firefighter positions and plan to close Station 4 during the summer months (you know, when everyone’s on the Cape).
Fear not residents near the Heath School, there have been no cuts in the Town’s municipal golf [...]

Stubbing Your Toe on the Truth.

By Jim Conley • Mar 12th, 2007 • Category: Liquor Licenses, The Allen Files

So how has it come to pass that we know that there is a court case alleging a conspiracy to sell stolen goods by an employee of Food Center Liquors in Brookline Village? Well, it comes from an enterprising journalism student at Northeastern University, Preston Croteau.
Young Preston was assigned to cover an item on [...]

Sufragette Pity.

By Jim Conley • Mar 11th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics

Conventional wisdom has it that Jesse Mermell is a shoo-in for a seat on Brookline Selectman after May’s election. But what do we really know about Mermell? Well, she’s young and she goes to a lot of political conventions.
And she works as executive director to the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus. Who are [...]
