Jesse Mermell’s Self Orbit.

By Jim Conley • Apr 29th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, Campaigns

It’s curious to many that I would, at the same I call Tuesday’s election for Selectman for Jesse Mermell, go to great pains to question her candidacy.
On Thursday, the TAB’s Managing Editor Greg Reibman took to their blog to say I had a strong reaction to the endorsement. And that I should tell people [...]

Don’t Lose the Home Without It.

Barney Frank, Brookline’s Representative in Congress sure is attending to the needs of those who sent him to the Capitol. On Thursday, he announced that he’ll introduce a bill making Internet gambling (using credit cards) legal once again.
Says Frank, according to the Boston Herald:
“I strongly believe people should be able to do what they want [...]

The Brookline Model.

By Jim Conley • Apr 27th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Town Government

Hey, maybe Brookline is Massachusetts’ best run municipality after all. The Globe reports today that the Patrick Administration is following the Town’s example by setting up advisory boards populated by people who will likely benefit financially from the decisions made.
In this case, the Massachusetts transportation secretary has put together a group that includes private [...]

TAB in a Strange Orbit.

By Jim Conley • Apr 26th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Override, Brookline Politics, Campaigns

As forecast, the Brookline TAB has thrown its endorsement to Selectman’s candidate Jesse Mermell. Not that it matters; this election was decided a long time ago.
I had posted previously that I couldn’t imagine on what grounds a newspaper could see their way clear to endorsing Mermell, expecting that the editors might take a view [...]

Smitten.

By Jim Conley • Apr 25th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, Campaign Finance

I’m just wild about Henry.
Today, Representative Henry Waxman (D-Cal.) presided over a hearing that authorized a subpoena of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. Yesterday, he uncovered the Pentagon’s cover-up of the friendly-fire fraticide of former NFL star and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. He’s after phone records and e-mails concerning the purge of US [...]

Selectmen Create Home Sales Prevention Committee.

By Jim Conley • Apr 24th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Override, Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen

Talk about timing. Tonight, the Brookline Selectmen will consider appointing a committee to trump up (er, examine) the need to increase the property tax through a Proposition 2.5 over-ride.
In other news reported today, sales of existing homes experienced their steepest drop since 1989 [see report]. And foreclosures in Massachusetts were up 47% in March [...]

Depends on Your Definition of Experience.

By Jim Conley • Apr 24th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, Campaigns

Today’s mail drop featured a flier from the Mermell for Selectman campaign…hope she didn’t pay a lot for it. It’s very good on the comedic value, though; as in this testimonial from Brookline Selectmen’s Chair (and Mermell campaign Co-chair) Robert Allen:
“Jesse Mermell has the creativity and experience we need. She has my strong support.”
The [...]

Whither the Trash Fee?

By Jim Conley • Apr 24th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Town Government

Word on the street is that Brookline’s trash fee collection — and accounting — will need to be changed as the result of a November 2006 Superior Court decision calling the City of Springfield’s trash fee an illegal tax.
Springfield poured the revenue into its General Fund rather than using it to offset collection costs. Hey, [...]

Things That Make You Go Hmmm.

By Jim Conley • Apr 24th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

Ever wonder why people in Brookline Town Government resist the idea of a mayoral form of government? Ever wonder why there is no real audit of the Town’s finances (only financial statements reformatted by an accounting firm)?
Ever wonder why the DPW was so hell bent to get the Parks Mob and Brookline PAX (with [...]

More of Mermell’s Deep Thinking.

By Jim Conley • Apr 22nd, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen, Campaigns

The Parks Mob has a Web page up asking the candidates for Brookline Selectmen for comments on a host of issues. Check out their responses here.
You get the feeling that Levine has actually thought about these issues, as we’ve seen before. And Mermell? Well, it’s hard to miss the deep analytical thinking when [...]
