Chumps in Charge.

By Jim Conley • Jun 30th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

Now that the Brookline Selectmen have approved another $1.5 million gift to the Boston Archdiocese for their housing project at St. Aidan’s, it’s a good time to look at what costs the Town is subsidizing (using affordable housing trust funds). Looking at the Church developer’s project budget dated May 24, 2007 [click here to [...]

Urban Ring Update.

By Jim Conley • Jun 29th, 2007 • Category: On Brookline Blog

One of the things that pleases me the most with this site is the contribution Archie Mazmanian has made on whistle blowers and the Urban Ring project. Here’s his latest update on the latter [click to read article].

A Stupid Question.

By Jim Conley • Jun 29th, 2007 • Category: On Brookline Blog

If the editors of the local paper feel that they need to weigh in on L’Affaires de Brookline - you know, like endorse candidates and policy - shouldn’t they at least live in Town and share the burden with the rest of us?
It used to be that a newspaper endorsement was made because the publisher [...]

It’s a Great Day…

By Jim Conley • Jun 28th, 2007 • Category: St. Aidan's

…to be a White Christian in America. The US Supreme Court is the George W. Bush Court and we’ll no longer have any special treatment for the people whom we made live in a segregated society a mere four decades ago.
This, on the same day that the Brookline Selectmen give over $1.5 million in [...]

Can’t Miss the Signs.

By Jim Conley • Jun 28th, 2007 • Category: St. Aidan's

Good idea to give $1.5 million to the Boston Archdiocese for St. Aidan’s?  Not if you can read the tea leaves on the Church’s finances.  The Globe says the deal to sell off the Archdioese’s Caritas hospital chain is dead because the buyer was surprised by Caritas’ poor financial health.
Read the Globe story.

Checks in the Mail.

By Jim Conley • Jun 28th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Town Government, St. Aidan's

There’s an interesting side note on the threatening letters being sent to plaintiffs in the St. Aidan’s suit. The attorney for the Archdiocese (and pen pal to the plaintiffs) is Michael Vhay of the firm DLA Piper.
Selectman Jesse Mermell cashed two campaign checks from attorneys at DLA Piper - one for $500 and one [...]

Ghost Town.

By Jim Conley • Jun 27th, 2007 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government, Goldberg Follies, St. Aidan's

I guess it’s true that most young people - unable to afford to live in Brookline - have moved to other parts of the country. Today’s New York Times has a front pager showing poll results [see poll] that indicate Americans between the ages of 17 and 29 are “leaning to the left” politically.
They [...]

Chump Change.

By Jim Conley • Jun 27th, 2007 • Category: On Brookline Blog

Tomorrow’s TAB features a front page story saying that any additional funds given to the Boston Archdiocese for its St. Aidan’s project will not come back to the Town. This, because our so-called housing experts confirmed that the “loan” to the Archdiocese is really a gift (at yesterday’s public hearing on an additional $1.5 [...]

Muzzle Tough.

By Jim Conley • Jun 27th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Town Government, St. Aidan's

Last night’s Selectmen’s hearing on a $1.5 million gift to the Boston Archdiocese for its housing project at St. Aidan’s appeared to be a typical town hall-engineered pep rally. Not as many opponents to the additional funding as there are proponents, it would appear.
There’s an interesting back story to that.
It seems that some of [...]

Passing the Plate.

By Jim Conley • Jun 27th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government, St. Aidan's

There’s an often-used saying in business planning that goes, “The definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing, but expecting different results.” And it appears that the Brookline Selectmen are about to prove the maxim correct by gifting $1.5 million in public funds to the Boston Archdiocese’s St. Aidan’s project.
This is insane. [...]
