Dreams In the Millions.

By Jim Conley • Sep 30th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Override, Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

The Boston Globe’s City Weekly section (where stenography and reporting are confused) has an item on the Brookline Selectmen/Children’s Hospital lease deal [see story]…now a $75 million project.
Once again, we’re treated to the projection that the office building Children’s is putting up in Brookline Village will render $1 million in new tax revenue to the [...]

No Police Records Forthcoming.

By Jim Conley • Sep 29th, 2007 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

Prior to filing a Court action to secure police records from May’s Brawl at Town Hall, I heard from the Massachusetts Public Records Division saying that they had taken up my appeal of the Town’s withholding of the incident reports.
In a letter received today, I’ve been advised that it is the opinion of the Division [...]

Great Moments in Hypocrisy.

By Jim Conley • Sep 28th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

Remember back in May of 2003 when Brookline Town meeting passed a resolution admonishing the US Government on the Patriot Act by saying: “Brookline is a politically diverse and democratic community whose residents are committed to preserving the human rights and civil liberties enunciated in [the US Constitution]“?
I wonder if there’ll be a similar resolution [...]

Zoning Madness.

By Jim Conley • Sep 28th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government, Brookline Town Meeting

Archie updates his “Zoning Amendments ‘R’ Us” installment in advance of Brookline Town Meeting. He calls the looming session, “the silly season.” There he goes again, being charitable to those in town government by calling them silly.
Read the latest installment here.

High-Minded Jena.

By Jim Conley • Sep 27th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

It seems that the efforts of civil libertarians to hem in a police dpartment run amok have paid off.
Wait a minute, you don’t think I’m talking about the abusive public indictment (sans proof) of a selectman by the Brookline Police Chief and Town Administrator?
No, I’m talking about the more enlightened community of Jena, Louisiana [see [...]

Today’s Cryptic Message.

By Jim Conley • Sep 27th, 2007 • Category: On Brookline Blog

“And there’s winners, and there’s losers;
But they aint no big deal.
Because the simple man pays for the thrills,
The bills and the pills that kill.”

- John Mellencamp, “Little Pink Houses”

Great Moments in Construction Schedules.

By Jim Conley • Sep 27th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government, St. Aidan's

Now that’s odd. In a TAB story concerning construction delays at the Boston Archdiocese and Brookline Selectmen’s housing project at the former St. Aidan’s Church, developer Lisa Alberghini says:
…the project had gotten commitments from all of its lenders, but was awaiting $330,000 from the state Department of Housing and Community Development.
“They’re right now trying [...]

They’ll Say Anything.

By Jim Conley • Sep 26th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

As I’ve said previously, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the Parade of Fools consider a ground lease with Children’s Hospital in Brookline Village [see post].
I have seen the TAB report on the hearing and I’ve just now been able to get back up from the floor. The brief story says:
“Ken Lewis, a member [...]

Piece of Cake.

By Jim Conley • Sep 26th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

Check out this post from Jessica Scarpati at the TAB’s blog [click here to view].
This says it all about the state of affairs in Brookline. Your Selectmen put on a show where they pretend to deliberate over a deal with developers. And when they vote as instructed, one of the developers rises [...]

Third Degree Burns.

By Jim Conley • Sep 25th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Town Government

As the blogger Atrios says, “Oh God, the stupid…it burns!”
Folks, I’m not sure I can cover the dog and pony show that the Brookline Selectmen are putting on with respect to the ground lease they are entering into with Children’s Hospital [see previous].
This group has no business deciding on which paper stock the final agreement [...]
