St. Aidan’s a Right to Work Site?

By Jim Conley • Sep 7th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

It would appear so, given the draft of a contract being negotiated by the builder of the housing project being put up by the Boston Archdiocese and the Brookline Selectmen. A few weeks back I wrote a post drawing a parallel between the commercial viability of this housing project to the shoe industry. [...]

Quote of the Day.

By Jim Conley • Sep 7th, 2007 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall

“There is a distinction drawn in the construction of the “investigatory” exemption in (the Federal Freedom of Information Act) between government surveillance or oversight of the performance of duties of its employees and investigations which focus directly on specifically alleged illegal acts, illegal acts of particular identified officials, acts which could, if proved, result in [...]

Question Time.

By Jim Conley • Sep 7th, 2007 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall

Question: Why is On Brookline going to ask the Superior Court to release the police reports on the so-called altercation at a ZBA hearing in May?
Answer: Under the Public Records Law, the last recourse for a person requesting records from a government entity is to file a “Complaint of Injunctive Relief” with the Superior Court. [...]

Off to Court.

By Jim Conley • Sep 6th, 2007 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Selectmen

Gee, you’d think that an office called the State Public Records Division could handle a simple appeal of a denial to release police reports, as has the Town of Brookline [see previous]. You’d think that; but you’d be wrong. Hell, the attorneys at Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s Office won’t even return [...]

Demolition Derby (2).

By Jim Conley • Sep 6th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

It’s more than curious to me that the Town of Brookline, with its (infrequently) aggressive preservation commission, its bevy of community activists and its general attitude of political correctness would allow the razing of a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places (St. Aidan’s rectory) without a stink. Especially, when you consider [...]

Slouching Towards Salt Lake.

By Jim Conley • Sep 6th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

Today’s TAB has a small item on the purchase of a lot at 12 Catlin Road by the Church of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons). Apparently, the LDS wants to build a meetinghouse at the site.
The item features a comical quote from Brookline Planning Director Jeff Levine when he says that under the Dover [...]

Throw Another Stone on the Wall.

By Jim Conley • Sep 5th, 2007 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Selectmen

The ever-enterprising TAB reporter Jessica Scarpati has a report up saying that the police records from an investigation charging Brookline Police with racial bias during last May’s Brawl at Town Hall, “may never become public [read story].”
Seems the Town’s lawyers - paid by taxpayers but in service to hacks - are claiming an exemption under [...]

Where’d The Affordable Housing Go?

By Jim Conley • Sep 5th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

Gee, you would think that after taking $6 million in public funds to build affordable housing, the Boston Archdiocese and Brookline Selectmen would have plans to start building affordable housing at its St. Aidan’s housing project.
But the only application on file with the Brookline Building Department is to build market rate condos at the site [...]

Shaking the Banana Tree.

By Jim Conley • Sep 5th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen

I think I’ve figured out what’s behind the flight of the “mom and pop” stores from Brookline. They’re tired of being shaken down by Brookline Town Government. (I mean official Brookline, not the elected official who appears to provide concierge services in exchange for campaign donations.)
Recently, a local restaurant owner provided me with [...]

St. Aidan’s Mystery.

By Jim Conley • Sep 4th, 2007 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

In an earlier post, I made reference to a memorandum authored by former Brookline Planning Director Robert J. Duffy and the legal argument he offers for destroying the historically significant rectory at St. Aidan’s [see post].
Among other things, Duffy argues that the rectory can be demolished by saying:
“The final recorded reservation easement includes Section [...]

Labor Day Message.

By Jim Conley • Sep 1st, 2007 • Category: News and Updates

“Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is superior to capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.”
- Abraham Lincoln
