Brookline Says Yes to Change.

By Jim Conley • Feb 6th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline, MA Politics, Campaigns

Looks like Barack Obama’s message of change rained down on Brookline yesterday - he polled 55 percent of the Democratic vote to Hillary Clinton’s 44 percent.
Better yet, the turnout was nearly 63 percent of registered voters.
Next up is the May local election that is looking increasingly competitive at the selectmen’s level. Pinch me, [...]

Hot Damn.

By Jim Conley • Feb 5th, 2008 • Category: Brookline, MA Politics, Campaigns

The TAB’s Jessica Scarpati reports that we have our first serious non-incumbent declared for the May selectman’s race - town meeting member Richard Benka. I don’t quite understand the Benka candidacy consisting as motivated by Gil Hoy’s announcement that he’ll stand for re-election. Anyway, it looks like a race.
Nancy, we hardly knew ya.
Update: Benka [...]

Us vs. Them.

By Jim Conley • Feb 5th, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Selectmen, Police

What’s going on with the Brookline Selectmen’s blue ribbon committee panel of experts to advise them on police review procedures? Beats me.
I thought that panel members were going to be interviewed at tonight’s meeting. But according to Town Administrator Richard Kelliher, there’s no need for that because the selectmen heard the list of [...]

They Paved Paradise…

Archie has added to his “World of Brookline Zoning” series and says that, when it comes to Brookline’s recent zoning battles, to the victor go the parking spaces.

Brookline Zoning/Land Use Turf Wars.

By Archie Mazmanian • Feb 4th, 2008 • Category: News and Updates, World of Brookline Zoning

By Arshag A. Mazmanian
The dust has yet to settle on the mass resignations of ZBA members last fall and the recent resignation of Building Commissioner Jim Nickerson that may have been causally connected to the May 24th Town Hall Brawl triggered by a ZBA decision just prior thereto, which the ZBA reversed several weeks [...]

Question Time.

By Jim Conley • Feb 4th, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Selectmen, Police, Robert Allen

Question: Why does Brookline need a civilian review board to handle citizen complaints into police department actions?
Answer: Well, besides the obvious reason that the police can’t investigate themselves, it puts control of department investigation into the hands of residents. The idea is not to put new pressure on officers, but to remove politics from [...]

Suddenly, the Choice Is Clear.

By Jim Conley • Feb 2nd, 2008 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline, MA Politics, Jesse Mermell, Robert Allen

This is funny. A few days back I started receiving messages from political types in Brookline saying that their caller ID had registered a call from the “Law Offices of Robert Allen.” The calls came to them late in the evening, and given that these weren’t supporters of the former selectmen’s chair, they [...]

You Get to Guess Who Will Serve.

By Jim Conley • Feb 1st, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Selectmen, Police

This is strange.  The Brookline Selectmen have posted their meeting agenda for Tuesday, and it says that they are going to take up the question of “adopting a charge and appointing” their sham panel of experts to review citizen complaints against the police department.
Hmmm.  A couple of Tuesdays ago, I’m pretty sure I heard the [...]

I’m Missing Two Months.

By Jim Conley • Feb 1st, 2008 • Category: St. Aidan's

My calendar says it’s February 1st, not the first of April. But I’ve just received an e-mail from Fran “The Snitch” Price (upon my request to get a copy of a construction contract for the project at St. Aidan’s) that reads:
“With regard to your request, please be advised that the construction
contract with Capitol [Construction] [...]

They’ll Say Anything (6).

By Jim Conley • Feb 1st, 2008 • Category: Brookline Override Ballot, Brookline Selectmen, Town Finances

In doing research for a piece on the Proposition 2.5 over-ride coming to the ballot soon, I came across this passage from the Moody’s Credit Rating Advisory for the Town of Brookline:
“Going forward, management anticipates that recent zoning updates to height requirements will continue to encourage new commercial growth, particularly along the Route 9 and [...]
