Pass the Kool Aid.

By Jim Conley • Apr 30th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Police, Brookline Town Government

So, I’m sitting here at the public hearing of the police citizens review panel listening to the chair of the Town’s Human Resources Board Chairman Kenneth Kurnos going all Clarence Darrow on behlaf of Brookline Police Chief Daniel O’Leary — “the best police chief in the continental US.”
He’s looked into the chief’s soul and can [...]

The On Brookline Voter’s Guide.

Here’s On Brookline’s exclusive guide to the May 6th local ballot. As always, we strive for fairness and balance in matters of public import.
Brookline Selectmen Candidates

Dick Benka - Appears capable of thinking on his own, but endorsed by several of the more despicable people in Brookline politics. Likes math (yikes). Retired from [...]

The Thanks You Get.

By Jim Conley • Apr 29th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Fire, Brookline Town Government

What is it with these people in municipal government? I mean, after 9/11 I thought firefighters would never have to demand respect from their political bosses. But as today’s march on the State House indicates, it’s not so.
Here in Brookline, the hack job [see previous post] concerning “red flu” in the Globe’s City [...]

Great Moments in Traffic Engineering.

By Jim Conley • Apr 28th, 2008 • Category: Brookline DPW, Brookline Override

Remember when Brookline DPW Commissioner A. Thomas DeMaio promoted a clerk in his office (with no previous experience) to transportation director [see previous post]? Well, when you aspire to the type of planning that results in the metered space pictured above (from the Beacon Street reconstruction project) it all makes sense.
Hey, I know. [...]

The Brookline Override Is About Failure.

By Jim Conley • Apr 27th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Finances, Brookline Override, Campaigns

In little more than a week from now, voters will go to the polls to weigh in on a Brookline override of Prop 2.5. Practically speaking, the amount involved ($5-6 million) is not a lot of money. The town’s municipal budget comes in around $190 million and the property valuation in Brookline is [...]

Brookline Override Bait and Switch.

By Jim Conley • Apr 25th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Finances, Brookline Override, Brookline Town Government, Campaigns

Here’s a mailer I received yesterday from the organization pushing for a Brookline Prop 2.5 override. If this group were marketing a product, they’d likely have violated most of the ethical and legal requirements of a communication to customers. Though, it’s what you’d expect from an organization whose founding member is Selectman Bobby [...]

Benka Hits the Daly Double.

By Jim Conley • Apr 25th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Politics, Campaign Finance, Campaigns

Brookline Town Clerk Pat Ward has posted the campaign finance reports of candidates for Brookline Selectmen [read reports here].
At more than $16 thousand raised (through mid-April), Town Meeting Member Richard Benka is the runaway leader in the money race. Current Board Chair Nancy Daly has cashed checks amounting to only half of Benka’s tally. [...]

The MCAS Override.

By Jim Conley • Apr 24th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Finances, Brookline Override, Brookline Schools, Campaigns

I’ve wondered why the Brookline School Committee is so hell bent to lengthen the school day by 20 minutes, and to finance it through a Brookline override. Now I know. A longer day means better MCAS scores.
In a study published by the Massachusetts Department of Education [see article], schools that have increased the day [...]

Dust Between the Ears.

By Jim Conley • Apr 23rd, 2008 • Category: Asbestos, St. Aidan's

Now that the Boston Archdiocese has demolished the rectory at the St. Aidan’s housing project site, they’re hauling the debris away. And until recently, that was kicking up a fair amount of dust.
I thought the purpose of having air monitors at the site was to make sure that there’s no lead and asbestos intermingled [...]

Trust in the Invisble.

By Jim Conley • Apr 23rd, 2008 • Category: Betsy DeWitt, Brookline Override, Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen, Campaigns, Jesse Mermell

Brookline Selectmen Betsy DeWitt and Jesse Mermell take to the TAB’s op-ed page to urge a yes vote on the May 6th override ballot bailout. It’s like the surgeon who amputated the wrong leg asking you for the chance to reattach it. Yikes.
There are lots of whoppers in these 700 words, but this [...]
