Brookline Housing Busts.

By Jim Conley • Apr 17th, 2008 • Category: St. Aidan's

I’m often told that Brookline is impervious to housing market woes given its close proximity to the Longwood Medical Area and other “best-in-the-world” features.
Well, tell that to the owners of the $105 million Longwood Towers who were foreclosed on yesterday.  Here’s a bit from the Globe story:
The Tudor-inspired complex had been purchased in 2005 for [...]

Going to the Candidate’s Debate.

By Jim Conley • Apr 16th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen

I’ll have a full report later, but a few general impressions from this evening’s League of Women Voters debate among candidates for Brookline Selectman. First, it has to mean something that the challenger to a seat on the board (Dick Benka) is infinitely better informed than the two incumbents (Gil Hoy and Nancy Daly). [...]

Six Firefighters Injured.

By Jim Conley • Apr 16th, 2008 • Category: News and Updates

Covering house fires isn’t part of our brief at On Brookline, but there’s unsettling news that six firefighters have been injured battling a blaze on Harrison Street. I don’t remember a time where news of a fire also means news of firefighters being injured, as has been the case in Brookline over the past [...]

Henry Can Demolish.

By Jim Conley • Apr 16th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Selectmen

The Brookline Preservation Commission will allow Red Sox owner John Henry to demolish the South Brookline mansion he purchased from LA Dodgers owner Frank McCourt.
And if you find yourself similarly situated, here’s a tip — hire a landscape architect. Seems that landscaper Joe Geller was Henry’s front man during the demolition proceedings. Geller [...]

Cardinals with Cranes.

By Jim Conley • Apr 16th, 2008 • Category: Asbestos, St. Aidan's

Those coming late to the St. Aidan’s debacle may not be aware of this point — the Boston Archdiocese’s development company (which has misled the community on asbestos and lead removal) has as its president Cardinal Sean O’Malley.
It is O’Malley’s company, and its lawyers, who browbeat 75 resident plaintiffs in a lawsuit (filed in part [...]

Fire Fran Price.

By Jim Conley • Apr 15th, 2008 • Category: Asbestos, Brookline Selectmen, St. Aidan's

If it were up to me, more than a few period would be relieved of their town hall positions because of the St. Aidan’s debacle. But at the top of my list would be the town’s housing director, Fran “The Snitch” Price.
On March 25th Price sent an “update” by e-mail to neighbors of [...]

Hey, I Know…

By Jim Conley • Apr 15th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Finances, Brookline Override, Brookline Selectmen

Now that retail bankruptcies are skyrocketing, let’s put a Proposition 2.5 override bailout on the ballot. The New York Times reports today that plummeting consumer spending is likely to “remake downtowns” due to large scale (retail) business failures.
Folks, when the Proverriders tell you that the cost of the tax increase amounts to a cup [...]

Absurdity Alert - Condition Red.

By Jim Conley • Apr 14th, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline DPW, Brookline Police, Brookline Selectmen

I think my head is going to explode.
Last Tuesday, the Brookline Selectmen appointed special counsel to represent them and other town officers in the matter of Arthur Conquest’s complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. (Can’t pay for teachers, but billable hours are another thing.)
And who did they hire? Why, our old friend [...]

Pulling Strings.

By Jim Conley • Apr 14th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Selectmen, Brookline Zoning

Don’t forget that in addition to appointing a new associate town counsel and declaring April 26th as “Brookline Day of Puppetry during their meeting tomorrow, the Brookline Selectmen will host officials from BU to hear of development plans for the area around Mountfort Street.
And here I was thinking that any day a developer’s crew appears [...]

Counsel Me This (2).

By Jim Conley • Apr 14th, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Police, Brookline Selectmen

It just gets worse.
Now, let me say that I am not 100 percent certain that the Patricia Correa whom the Brookline Selectmen will appoint as an associate town counsel tomorrow is the former AAG they tried to appoint to their police complaint review panel (more like 97 percent).
That said, they’ve completely lost it.

Counsel Me This.

By Jim Conley • Apr 14th, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Police, Brookline Selectmen

The web of town government malfeasance in the Arthur Conquest matter becomes more and more tangled. And judging from the reaction of those ensnared, we’re in for a nasty amount of wriggling.
Conquest has filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination stemming from his treatment at the hands of Broookline town government. [...]

Character Watch.

By Jim Conley • Apr 13th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Politics, Brookline Selectmen, Nancy Daly, Robert Allen, St. Aidan's, The Allen Files

The Globe’s City Weekly section takes a run at political analysis in today’s issue. And let’s just say they’d better stick to re-purposing press releases from Brookline Town Hall.
Beyond not knowing the proper spelling of the saint (Aidan) whose name graces a demolition project wreaking havoc in North Brookline, the Globe thinks that the [...]

Detecting Asbestos and Lead - The Brookline Method.

By Jim Conley • Apr 12th, 2008 • Category: Asbestos, St. Aidan's

Every once in awhile an environmental project yields a revolutionary method in abatement, detection or mitigation. Such is the case with the demolition of the rectory at the St. Aidan’s housing project (sponsored by the Town of Brookline and the Boston Archdiocese).
The Brookline method of air detection is [...]

Truth in Advertising.

By Jim Conley • Apr 11th, 2008 • Category: Brookline Finances, Brookline Override, Brookline Selectmen, Nancy Daly, Robert Allen

Whether or not a proposition 2.5 override ballot bailout passes on May 6th, it’s hard to miss the fact that the current town hall team is not up to handling the people’s business.  They have only one arrow in the quiver - raise taxes.
This is not a surprise.
We have no meaningful audit function in Brookline.  [...]

So Long, Laurie Partridge.

By Jim Conley • Apr 10th, 2008 • Category: Brawl at Town Hall, Brookline Police, Brookline Selectmen

I haven’t been this excited since I first saw Susan Dey play Laurie Partridge on my television screen (in Technicolor). Word out of last night’s meeting of the Citizen Police Complaint Panel has me giddy. Well, hopeful anyway.
I’m not sure that the direction in which this panel is heading is what (some of) the [...]
