Opening Night Tension.

I’ll have a full report tomorrow, but tonight’s opening performance of Brookline’s police complaint review panel was much more contentious than I had expected. Maybe it was because a few of the panel members have figured out that there’s more to this than reading a manual and offering helpful suggestions.

Or maybe it’s because Marty “Father Time” Rosenthal’s many reminiscences got on their nerves. That, and the member-attorney who defends police and who wanted to center the committee’s work on what the policy says (and not how it’s administered) sure got on my nerves.

And nothing compares to the spectacle of Town Counsel Jennifer Dopazo advising a public panel on compliance with public records laws. Like watching Al Capone give a tax seminar.

Stay tuned.

Update: The On Brookline entourage had to scoot out of the meeting early, but an attendee calls to report that the member-attorney referenced above - Douglas Louison - disclosed to the group that he currently represents (and has in the past) a Brookline police officer.

Which is a relief of sorts. I figured he was on retainer to the whole department, given the way he was trying to torpedo the work of the commission.

  1. Re: Update

I have forwarded this post to the late Walt Kelly’s Pogo, c/o Okeefenokee Swamp, to consider whether we may have in our Muddy River sister swamp a potential Cornflake of Int’rest. Got milk?
