From Hotline (link here), the on-line political site from the National Journal, it seems that their so-called future’s market (on people with national political ambition) is bullish on purported candidate for Selectman Jesse Mermell. Says Hotline, on “the stars we’ve been watching since 03″:
“MA Women’s Political Caucus Exec. Dir. Jesse Mermell (D): A former member of the MA Dems Central Cmte, she’s “gotten her name out there a little bit more” and is said to have future ambitions.”
Just what we need, another person on that Board driven by their own self interest. Think a person with national political ambition wants to take on the cronies entrenched at Brookline Town Hall? Think again.

Is the attraction the resume? Consider Debbie (I still cannot refer to her as Deb) Goldberg and her misfire for Lt. Gov. Why not just provide common sense to Brookline, on a part-time basis, perform your civic duty, for a term or two and just step aside? No, in Brookline, it is part of the social life to engage in politics on a part-time basis, perhaps build up one’s professional career, at basically low cost and without heavy lifting. So I guess light weights qualify. If your day job is not demanding, there is available the fun and games available serving as a Selectman or a TMM or on a Town agency or board, that may enchance your social life in the community. Even if your day job is demanding, consider how relaxing it might be evenings dealing with mundane issues such as overnight parking, zoning, empty stores, liquor and common victualer licenses, the developer du jour, etc, ad nauseum. Apparently the professionals paid to do their jobs are inadequate and need oversight from unpaid amateurs doing their civic duties, at their convenience, late afternoons, early evenings, with no heavy lifting, thank you. Ah, but you get what you pay for. But what are we getting? So bring on the candidates in Brookline’s version of TV’s “American Idol.” (Personally, I preferred Chuck Barris’ “The Gong Show”, not in the least because he used a Count Basie theme song.) So perhaps the “Brookline Idle” can audition for us. Let the May pole dance begin.
