This is rich. The Washington Post has a story in today [click here to read] on Governor Deval Patrick’s dramatic fall to earth. And whom do they seek out for political analysis? Perry Street resident and former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis (see picture at left).
And on the ethics of it all, the Post turns to Brookline’s Representative in the US House, Barney Frank. Here’s the passage:
“Critics said the distinction Patrick tried to draw between his private and public roles did not exist when the governor of Massachusetts was calling an executive at Citigroup, a financial giant with significant business interests in the state, a point Patrick later conceded.
‘That was a mistake in judgment, not just cosmetics,’ said Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.).”
Hmm. According to the Web site Opensecrets.org, of the nearly $2 million in campaign funds raised by Frank in the 2006 election cycle [see report] nearly half came from the financial, insurance and real estate companies (including Citigroup) that are regulated by the House Financial Services Committee, which Frank chairs.
Apparently Frank’s idea of good judgment is to make sure his service to business interests is parcel to his public life exclusively.
