More of Mermell’s Deep Thinking.

The Parks Mob has a Web page up asking the candidates for Brookline Selectmen for comments on a host of issues. Check out their responses here.

You get the feeling that Levine has actually thought about these issues, as we’ve seen before. And Mermell? Well, it’s hard to miss the deep analytical thinking when she says:

“The obvious benefits of the recreation and relaxation that open space provides only begin to scratch the surface of the advantages of open space.”

What are the other advantages? Trees increase property values and a park bench is a nice place to sit and chat, says Mermell. It’s like Deb Goldberg has been intellectually cloned.

Update: I’m on the edge of my seat, as I await the endorsement of the local newspaper in this race. I’m betting they’ll go with Mermell. But it’s going to be a laugh riot to read the justification.

Let’s see, what are the choices?

Her experience? She’s 27. Her leadership? I’ve never seen it. Her knowledge of the issues? Please. In line with Brookline values? She works for a so-called woman’s organization that endorsed Kerry Healey for Governor. A compelling personal story? It’s a sham.

Like I say, a laugh riot.

  1. Julius Levine’s educational and professional background indicates a lack of open space between his ears. He is quite accomplished. Now what may be Jesse’s “advantages of open space” as she rides her one-trick pony backwards led by her mentor Bobby Allen? Three Selectmen - Allen, Hoy and Daly - all attorneys - endorse this one-trick pony. What does that say about the judgments of Allen, Hoy and Daly? Judging by the BOS, Brookline is not a meritocracy. Keep in mind the old Greek adage that the fish rots from the head down.

  2. With three-fifths of the current Selectmen endorsing her (see my comment above), is this a remake of “Dumb and Dumber”? Is this a cloning of ineffectiveness? Brookline used to be honored with the services of unselfish skilled professionals and businessmen who would bring for one term, or sometimes two, their management skills to serve as Selectmen, with nothing personal to gain other than their civic duty. In recent years, the office has been sought too often by attorneys wishing to enhance their legal careers, including at some point in Brookline municipal law practice, or as a stepping stone to further political office. The revolving door has not made Brookline a better community. Perhaps these “rubber-stamp” endorsements of Jesse by Allen, Hoy and Daly demonstrate their personal fears of having a real adult, Julius Levine, in their midst. Why Julius might even ask a meaningful question of Town Counsel when the latter appears before the BOS.
