Over-ride Group Saddles Up.

The Brookline Selectmen have put this agenda item up for tomorrow night’s meeting: “Further discussion of options for considering the advisability of an override for FY09.”

Now if you can figure out what that means, you qualify to serve on the “over-ride study group” the Selectmen are ginning up.

As one who believes that a Prop 2.5 over-ride in the current local economy is a prescription for disaster, I’m hoping the group will be chaired by Selectman Nancy Daly.

Her previous leadership of the CPA study group played a large part in driving that tax surcharge into the ground due to the miscalculations on revenue achieved, the debunked use for the proceeds and the false claims made by the pro-CPA campaign.

  1. To fund the municipality’s bloated bureaucracy, the strategy for getting a proposition 2.5 over-ride usually goes something like this. First, exhaust whatever funds there might be available by doing something stupid like renovating town hall. Then, pleading poverty, threaten to cut school programs, such as music, sports, languages, or theater. Then, promise that if the override passes, the school programs will be restored. Essentially, the strategy is to hold the kids hostage until the taxpayers cough up the ransom. Works every time!

  2. Bless their hearts . . . the only REVENUE scheme on the table was just trashed by our Selectpersons . . . Parking stickers and increase in fines and penalties. Guess THEY didn’t want the 2.5 override effort softened by additional revenue?! Yes, and I believe that Dr. Sperber is hot on another study group pushing to reduce the commercial tax rate! It’s the HIGH RENT that’s keeping the stores MT! Increase the damn thing and it will drive down the rent as the RIT’s won’t be able to afford to keep the price so OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH! (The Mom and Pops CAN afford the TAX, it’s the RENT that keeps them out of Brookline!)
