Chump Change.

Tomorrow’s TAB features a front page story saying that any additional funds given to the Boston Archdiocese for its St. Aidan’s project will not come back to the Town. This, because our so-called housing experts confirmed that the “loan” to the Archdiocese is really a gift (at yesterday’s public hearing on an additional $1.5 million).
Crikey, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that when someone keeps asking you to lend them money (i.e., “this time is the last time, I really, really mean it”) it’s a pretty good sign that they’re not working with a lot of capital with which to pay you back. I’ve said all along that this was a gift to the Church, and I’m no genius.
Only a chump would be surprised by this revelation, or give the Archdiocese more money.

Gee, if the Town paid federal taxes, it might be able to take a charitable deduction for this contribution. Query whether the Selectmen can make such a gift without approval by Town Meeting? The phrase ultra vires comes to mind when a corporation (including a municipal corporation) takes action that may not be within its charter.
