Incalculable Incompetence.

Remember how the Town of Brookline triggered a Farmer’s Market debacle by telling the organizer of the event that, because of the market, the Town lost $14,300 in parking revenue from the lot where it sets up?
And remember when this site reported that the Town’s chief engineer had recalculated the lost revenue, but couldn’t say what the amount was because he had sent all the information to the Office of Official Obfuscation (Town Counsel Jennifer Dopazo)?
And remember how the information was not included in the documents sent to me by Dopazo?
Remember that?
Well, I have the documents now and it’s clear to see why the Town took so long to give them up. Click here to read the e-mail that puts the re-calculated amount of revenue at $3,640 - an $11 thousand difference.
Holy cow, if this doesn’t speak to the incompetence of Brookline Town Government I don’t know what does. Forget the inability to perform simple math. The new amount shows that the Farmer’s Market is pretty much covering the lost parking revenue through its $2,300 license fee. If anything, the farmers should be insisting on more services from the Town.
And what about the fact that someone can park all day in Coolidge Corner for $3.85? Seems to me if the Selectmen want to raise fees, they ought to start charging competitive parking rates at Centre Street West.

Just another “OOPS!” moment of Brookline Exceptionalism. Alas, Exceptionalism like this seems to become the rule in Brookline. Is it time for a “DO-OVER” of our property tax bills?
