This Is a Surprise?

I’m speechless (I know, I know). But it seems that some have been caught unaware that the rectory at St. Aidan’s is about to meet the wrecking ball. Listen to me old darlings, when those in Brookline Town Government and the Boston Archdiocese say they are “going to preserve the church”…they mean the Church building only.
The rectory building has been parceled off into a single lot and will have to be demolished in order to make way for new construction. Check the plans; it’s a goner. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the demolition occurred under the cover of darkness.
Once the rectory is gone it’s gone for good. Even if the Archdiocese runs out of money to finish the project. Even if there are mounds of lead and asbestos under the building. And even if the entire project becomes subsidized housing.
I think that’s why we have a demolition delay by-law. You know, to make sure that a historically significant building is not razed in haste.
But what do I know? It’s not like I’m a preservationist or architect that can understand the significance of saving historic properties. Why those people would be on a preservation commission and would want to put a stop to such a thing.
Oh sorry, we’re in Brookline. Never mind.

Three reasons to be on the Preservation Commission:
REAL ESTATE! REAL ESTATE! REAL ESTATE!
If the Saints can’t preserve us, what can we expect from mere mortal realtor interests?
