Dust Between the Ears.

Now that the Boston Archdiocese has demolished the rectory at the St. Aidan’s housing project site, they’re hauling the debris away. And until recently, that was kicking up a fair amount of dust.

I thought the purpose of having air monitors at the site was to make sure that there’s no lead and asbestos intermingled with the dust. But every time I ask the Town’s project manager (Planning Director Jeff Levine) what the monitors are reading, he doesn’t write back.

Let me make sure I have this right. Air monitors are being used to assess a potential environmental hazard. And the material at St. Aidan’s — given its age and results of independent environmental testing — could contain levels of lead and asbestos. But no one can find out if it does, as measured by the air monitors.

Sounds about right for Brookline town government.
