Hey I Know, Let’s…

…in the midst of a near 30 percent decline in Massachusetts’ home sales [see today's Globe story], add more to the cost of housing in Brookline (the community second most expensive in cost of ownership) through a Proposition 2.5 override.

To top it off, let’s look at the 33 percent decline in condo sales statewide and waste $6 million in affordable housing funds to bring more units on line, like those at the St. Aidan’s housing project.

Eight years ago the need was for more of the affordable housing that the St. Aidan’s project could allegedly provide.  Now, not so much.  But that won’t stop the Brookline Selectmen from throwing $6 million (to start) at the project.

And if you think the church lot is an eyesore today…

  1. TOWN PURCHASES OF AFFORDABLE UNITS
    with in lieu of payments made by Chap. 40A developers of multi-residential developments could have been accomplished years ago, piecemeal. But I guess it was more important to squirrel away such payments to make a bigger impression and perhaps to accommodate the Archdiocese in its sale of St. Aidan’s. Yes, there were existing properties that could have been purchased with these funds and made available as affordable housing. But that would not have the political PIZZAZZ of millions for the Archdiocese. No small steps for our Town officials, no sir, but a giant leap of faith! OOPS?
